In 1938 Jo graduated with high grades in German, French, Dutch, English, History, Botany and Zoology. As such, Jo grew up with social-democratic views, especially regarding justice and equality. ![]() Jo’s mother came from an ardent socialist preacher’s family and her father was an active member of the SDAP, the Social Democratic Labour Party. The Schaft family were quite isolated too. Her fellow students thought she was a bit of a nerd, she was always dressed in an un-fashionable way and according to Miep Merkuur who was a good school friend of Jo’s "she often wore a cardigan when it was hot because her parents were afraid she might catch a cold". Although still somewhat secluded she had a good time which showed in her grades. After finishing elementary school in 1932 Jo went to the Hogereburgerschool at the Santpoorterplein near her parents’ home. She was regularly bullied because of her red hair and freckles. She was an excellent student who was quite modest but did not have much contact with her class mates. Her father was a teacher at an elementary school and was a member of the board of the socialistically inclined Federation of Dutch Teachers. Jo, as she was called, had a normal upbringing in a small socialist family. ![]() Her elder sister Annie, who was born in 1915, died from diphtheria in 1927. ![]() She was the second daughter of Pieter Schaft and Aafje Talea Vrijer. Portland chef Jeremy McFadden first discovered farro while in culinary school in Italy, and preferred the grain for making risotto. Beyond the white rice, bread or pasta (or the occasional replacement of brown rice or whole wheat items), a larger world of grains provides an opportunity to expand our pantry and recipe repertoire.Īs the chef at Michigan’s Granor Farm, Berens saw a vast diversity of grains being grown and began to use the “underappreciated staples” for more than hot breakfast porridge or baked goods. ![]() “I never took much notice of different grains or legumes,” writes chef and cookbook author Abra Berens in her new cookbook’s introduction, a refrain many can likely relate to.Ī series of new whole grains cookbooks, including Berens’ “Grist,” give Anderson and others more than enough reason to pay attention and be excited about these ingredients. While white and brown rice varieties pack supermarket shelves, finding alternatives such as buckwheat or amaranth can be tricky. Even without these preconceived notions, it may be that whole grains just haven’t come on your radar. ![]() ![]() Days later, his family and friends should have been picking up the pieces, moving on. Regardless of which category you fall into, I hope you enjoy the story. Other readers may be satisfied with the answers and the ending. Although I do answer the outstanding questions from Nine Minutes, there is more to this story, and some readers may consider it a cliffhanger. There are many twists and turns in both books that can best be connected if read consecutively. I highly recommend that you read my first novel, Nine Minutes, to be able to understand the background stories of the main characters. ![]() RECOMMENDED FOR READERS 18 AND OLDER DUE TO STRONG LANGUAGE, SEXUAL SITUATIONS AND VIOLENCE This is Book 2 of 3 in the Nine Minutes Trilogy. ![]() ![]() ![]() Consider the way slave owners justified slavery in the antebellum South, by suggesting black people were fundamentally inferior to white and preferred slavery to freedom.Īnother way to apply the functionalist perspective to racism is to discuss the way racism can contribute positively to the functioning of society by strengthening bonds between in-group members through the ostracism of out-group members. ![]() Nash (1964) focused his argument on the way racism is functional for the dominant group, for example, suggesting that racism morally justifies a racially unequal society. How can racism and discrimination contribute positively to society? A functionalist might look at “functions” and “dysfunctions” caused by racial inequality. In the view of functionalism, racial and ethnic inequalities must have served an important function in order to exist as long as they have. ![]() Do we need more than one theory to explain racism, prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination? Functionalism ![]() As you read through these theories, ask yourself which one makes the most sense and why. We can examine issues of race and ethnicity through three major sociological perspectives: functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. ![]() ![]() With McLemore’s signature lush prose, Dark and Deepest Red pairs the forbidding magic of a fairy tale with a modern story of passion and betrayal.
